Music has played an influential role in Devin’s life, paving the way to 10 years as a performer. An avid fan of The Beatles, The Doors, and Pink Floyd Devin grew up in a world constantly filled with music. He remembers his first love at 12 months old was his fathers’ Stratocaster. He played many instruments as a child including the accordion, the saxophone, the piano, and eventually as a teenager the guitar, harmonica, and sitar.
Growing up in Los Angeles, spending time at the beaches and deserts of southern California, Devin’s musical tastes formed from tuning into practically everything on the radio, and everywhere around him. Every culture and rhythm he could find. From; Prince to Coletrain, Gamelan to Classical Indian music, Jazz to Zydeco, K-love radio amour to Atari video game soundtracks: The eclectic culture of sound around him provided almost endless options to a child with open ears. At home he was strongly influenced by the music of the Buffalo Springfield and Bob Dylan, as well as the more textural sounds of Jimi Hendrix and Big Brother and the Holding Company. This blend of influences has lead to a musician with a truly eclectic nature.
A poet at heart his music has always been a dynamic vehicle for his lyrics. Seldom content to say nothing, Devin’s songs have a directness that addresses the audience. The characters in his music speak through him, and each display their own particular flavor of the emotional palette. Along with current bassist Alex Atwood He started his first rock band (The Huxlian Reduction Valve) around the age of 17 and got first hand experience of what it takes to bring his music onto the stage. This was the first group where he began incorporating the Sitar into live performances, and this is also the group that recorded his first album Isness (Self-released 2000)
The Long Beach based group Entropy was his next project, which again placed Devin as lead guitarist/sitarist and front man. Entropy performed in and around Los Angeles for two years. They played a lot of different venues, private parties, colleges, etc. Also in that short time Devin self-released 3 Albums and a Live CD. Over the years these and many other projects have helped Devin to hone his songwriting skills. Performing non-stop as a solo artist helped Devin independently record, produce and release his music.
His first solo album Lucid Now (mostly an instrumental electronic/ambient CD) was released in the spring of 2003. His second CD entitled Shipwrecked Soul (mostly folk rock) was released in February of 2006. He is currently in the mix stage of his 3rd release entitled “Renaissance Man” (pop-rock) and is currently performing live a great deal of the new material for that album.
Live performance is where Devin shines. Improvisation plays a key factor in his sound and combines with his large body of written material to create dynamic set-lists incorporating both. A unique blend of music tastes and talents, Devin Haas is a musician setting the tone with a truly innovative style. He has recently launched a Trio and is now booking throughout Southern California.
