What do you get when you put a keen storyteller with four highly charged talented musicians--the Doug Means Project! The Project denotes the fusion of music as well as the collective of the aforementioned musicians. Front man Doug sets out to create a band and the music that serves as a "Means" to an end is genius.
With some of today's music being more about the gimmick and less about the talent, The Doug Means Project offers real music that is authentic and organic. Some of the band members are formally trained and/or self-taught, but what they have in common is a passion for the music.
Doug hails from Long Beach. The Project is made up of a stellar drummer, Jason (from Los Angeles), a deep thinking bass guitarist, Morley (from Marin County), guitarists, Josh and Eric, who alternate playing lead guitar (both from Los Angeles).
The aforementioned came together as a result of socializing at clubs, and attending local shows. Doug began playing trumpet at a young age but he's been singing and writing since age 16; Jason's been playing piano and drums since 9 years of age; Morley, influenced by his older brother, played guitar at an early age; Josh's dad gave him a guitar and he began strumming at 3; Eric got into his music at 16.
Ask DMP about its style and sound, one would get a few responses. Morley says that it is "skasta funk". Josh comments that "we're a pop band that does cool sh^*#!" Jason states emphatically that the music is "happy alternative funk". And front man Doug responds that "it's a rock hybrid with hip hop and reggae" undertones.
Whatever the exact fusion, the music is unique and different due to the diversity, backgrounds and innate personalities of the band members.
Influenced by reggae, gospel, R&B, rock, metal, funk, hip-hop and dancehall, the lyrics are tight and the melodies are raw. Morley says: "the pulse of our music holds it all together…it is melody and expressive embellishment." Through the lyrics exuding the ups and downs of life, Doug believes the content will help people live their lives better.
They also know that the band is a family: "…Whatever comes at them, DMP has decided to make it work." And that includes making great music, continuing to tell their stories and share advice with their listeners.
Working on your craft, practicing your craft and focusing on the marketing of your craft are some of the advice that the DMP has to offer. Due to their experience, they have learned individual and collective lessons; however, their love for the music keeps them focused. The highs, the girls, the fame and the potential money can be addictive. The Los Angeles' club scene can be difficult--the reality is that it's hard to make money there. Even that obstacle cannot hold them down. DMP will not be satisfied until the Means does come to a successful end!
