The original music of Forsaken Truth is melodic rock with elements of metal and even punk to create its unique and catchy sound. Stylistically, the music and title (Forsaken Truth) go hand in hand. It is a dark and emotional piece of work. Some songs are heavier, such as Bringing Me Down (demo) and some more delicate, like Facing Reality (demo). It combines ethereal vocals to guitar riffs similar to Metallica and Iron Maiden. Other influences include Lacuna Coil, Evanescence, and Dark Tranquility. Although the music is darker in feeling and sound, don’t be fooled.
Says singer Lyndsay Hoehl, "Although there are dark overtones in the music, in my lyrics I aim to give young people an outlet to take out their frustrations and bring a positive outlook to the dark things in life and tough situations."
Lyrically, the songs are metaphoric and could be perceived in a number of ways so most people can relate to them somehow. There are themes like life and death, society, relationships, and personal struggles. As songwriters, Lindsay and Ryan simply write what they like and what sounds good to their ears. Ryan’s ability to play guitar is amazing in that he can easily sound like two guitars. He can play lead or rhythm and pretty much fuses both in his style. Lyndsay’s vocals go perfectly with his very melodic/beautiful approach. That being said, all the music is extremely catchy and radio friendly.
One avid listener stated, "The music is like Metallica meets Lacuna Coil."
Another said, "The song Pardoned, reminds me of a Pink Floyd song! Sweet!"
And yet another fan said, "It’s sort of Evanescence-ish."
It was an interesting formation of the band, with Lyndsay creating the title Forsaken Truth in July of 2005. She had just ended her previous band, Annalitas, after many problems regarding scheduling and level of commitment. That was her third band that had failed miserably. She almost felt like throwing in the towel, after being up to her neck dealing with flaky musicians. However, instead of forsaking her lifelong pursuit, she decided to give it one more shot. She met guitarist Ryan Devine in August. It turned out they lived less just 5 minutes away from each other! Both brought in about 15 years experience musically, from guitar and piano lessons, to voice lessons and choir. After hearing each other’s original material in a small apartment for a few minutes, both had the same thought: ‘I can definitely work with this.’
From there they began to write the music of Forsaken Truth. Starting off, they had to sit on box crates in Lyndsay’s apartment she just moved into. It didn’t even bother them though, they were so eager to get the project going. Only one week after meeting, they had five songs and performed an open mic at Dreamstreet in Ocean Beach, where they were well received by passerby and the regulars. The AA group across the street even loved it and asked when FT would be playing next! A week later, they did an acoustic recording and posted it online, receiving all good feedback. Only two weeks into it and both knew that this was going to be good.
Lyndsay and Ryan started performing as an acoustic duo all around San Diego at local venues like Hot Monkey Love Café, Twiggs, and Living Room. After writing and playing acoustic for a solid two months, they recorded a full-band demo in October as a means to get more people into the electric sound and also to find a drummer and bassist.
