The Jazz Project Big Band is one of

Marty Conley, lead trumpet player and talented arranger, provides sparkling arrangements of jazz standards and each section features rock solid ensemble playing. The 8 brass, 5 sax, and 3 rhythm musical aggregation are entertaining souls that enjoy people pleasing, toe tapping, mind-candy music making! The instrumental soloists are a vital piece of the band’s presentation who provide a taste of tradition and creative exploration to stimulate the most ardent jazz fan. Bruce Cameron, David Castel de Oro, Tim Jameson, Gary Bucher, Mark Hammond, Mike Carnahan, Gerard Nolan & Chuck Gardner often are featured soloists at concerts and --- Mike Masessa provides the solid jazz drum beat. The director, Michael Smith, retired from his teaching duties at the San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts jazz program in June of 2000 and leads the ensemble.
In two words, "They entertain!" Besides playing music often composed and arranged by band members, they also play the music of new writers and arrangers of the modern big band jazz idiom such as, Sammy Nestico, Tom Kubis, Gordon Goodwin, and Mark Taylor among others.
