Stemming from a group of bands around Lemon Grove California from 2006-2008, the members of SMA met in the Navy, working aboard an aircraft carrier on North Island. The three roots of SMA, Daniel “fox” Galloway, Matt “beez” Lambert and Chris “slopes” Duncan, formed a series of bands ranging from ambient/space rock to experimental hardcore. The range of musical background between the three was vast; surf rock/hardcore/alternative drums, rockabilly/indie/ambient bass, experimental guitar, sound effects, unique playing styles, and a forever quest to think way outside the box music had put itself in.
After failing several projects and finally disbanding to different parts of the U.S. in early 2008, the root members found their way back to each other and back to San Diego in early 2010. Starting to write music the first week, the trio quickly pumped out a series of amazing songs, rekindling their old spirit and realizing their potential to continue as an instrumental three piece. After a few months, some discussion between the band brought up the idea of adding keys and vocals. Having a long history of chorus and many other vocal projects, and being niece to the great American Jazz drummer, Shelley Manne, Shelley “soofy” Dallaire was the perfect fit.
