Jon returned to San Diego after a national tour with his band, InMemory, and reunited with Colleen, who had moved to pursue a music degree. The two began writing and recording under the name The Material last October with San Diego local drummer, Noah Vowles, and former bassist of Every Time I Die, Kevin Falk. Midwestern transplant Brian Miller joined the group in January, solidifying the permanent lineup of theMATERIAL.
By March, the band recorded their self-produced EP “About Love and War” and began building an audience throughout San Diego and across the MySpace world. Underground music buzzbin IndieMusicProject.com raved -- before the CD was even pressed, "The consistently clear and mid-tempo songs are as unique as snowflakes, [and] Colleen's primal yet melodic singing...captures your interest and leaves you wanting to hear how the story ends."
944 Magazine added, “Their female lead singer delivers the group away from the stereotypical lead pop-female vocalist, and breathes new life to a barely touched wave of rock ‘n’ roll.”
Compared to bands such as Vedera, Circa Survive, and Dredg, theMATERIAL has managed to captivate casual audiences and independent music junkies alike with their ability to mix monumental, yet catchy, vocals with a driving rock sound and a touch of electronics. Combining a stylish image, energetic live show, and a determined attitude, this is theMATERIAL.
