A relatively young band, WES has only been together since February of 2004. The little known fact about this band is that it started out as a five-piece band. The original line up included: Tony (Vocals), Cesar (Guitar), Israel (Bass), Sicky (Drums), and Rodrigo (Second Guitar.) The project would see adversity early on when the second guitar player would leave the band a week before their first show that April. The band would go forward as a four-piece playing shows around its home town of San Diego and even play out-of-town shows in San Francisco, LA, Las Vegas and Phoenix. Through the first few months, the band experimented with different styles and sounds to come up with a style that would be the new WES sound. It was this constant change and experimenting that would take the band into a different direction. The different musical backgrounds would exacerbate the already difficult task of finding a common ground for these musicians. That same November, the band would go through another change when they would make the decision to let Tony go. Three months would pass before the band would become a four-piece again.
The band would meet Eric (Vocals) after his response to their ad in an online bulletin for musicians and bands. Not only did he impress the band with his preparation for the audition, he also showed the versatility in his vocals that the band was looking for. This would turn out to be the spark that the band was looking for. It was from this point on that the band would come back with a new sound, and a new perspective for the music that they love to play.
The current WES sound is still a fusion of the different musical backgrounds that they share. Cesar’s experimental sound can be heard in his intros and his solos. His versatility is what gives the band substance. Sicky brings the subtle air of punk rock in his drum beats which gives the music its raw sound. The heavy riffs come from the metal bass lines brought by Izz. The package is completed by the vocals. Eric’s vocals range from a free-flow, to a soulful melodic singing voice, to an angry-throaty scream. It is the range of different musical qualities, styles, and textures that give the WES sound its fullness.
The main focus of WES is to produce and share energy with the audience and listener. There is no underlying political agenda, no pretentious attitude, just the love of powerful angry music and its energy. It is as simple as that.
